Promoting Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in Nigeria (PREEEN)

groupThough, there are no MDGs on energy, yet sustainable development cannot be achieved without access to energy. About 60-70% of Nigerians do have access to electricity and modern energy services. Promoting Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in Nigeria was conceptualized with the objectives to increase public awareness of renewable energy and its potential for sustainable development; and to develop policies and enhance civil society participation in the development of these policies to foster the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency in Nigeria.  Thus, the PREEEN project is designed to address the energy crisis in Nigeria and at the same time contributing to reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases.  A major output of the PREEEN Project is development of a Nigerian “Green Paper”.

grouppix The PREEN project commenced in July 2006 with a one-day seminar titled “Renewable Energy:  The Key to Sustainable Energy Development in Nigeria”. The event was attended by participants from government, academics, NGOs, student bodies, private sector and representatives of the Nigerian Union of Teachers and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The one-day event was aimed at creating awareness on renewable energy technologies (RETs) and their potential for sustainable development and to build capacity in the civil society to enhance their participation in a forthcoming national multistakeholders’ dialogue to integrate renewable energy into the policy framework of Nigeria. Also, it was planned to enhance the participation of stakeholders in the on-going global climate change mitigation process as provided by the flexible mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol especially the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). The other objectives were to facilitate the creation of a network of renewable energy advocates (REAs) that will front the development of RETs in Nigeria and to publicly present the Calablar Declaration. The full report of the seminar can be viewed / downloaded here
